Overview:
Bryce Canyon National Park’s Division of Visitor & Resource Protection is seeking (3) highly-motivated, hard-working and personable students for a 12-week internship (Mid-May through Mid-August 2018).
Emergency Medical Service: Interns will assist emergency services staff with the planning and response to emergency medical incidents. Interns will be expected to maintain equipment and provide logistical support for major emergency incidents.
Interns will be provided CPR and First Aid certifications if not already held. Interns will train side by side with certified EMTs and Paramedics. Interns will work to support caregivers and be provided opportunities to help with patient care.
Search & Rescue: Interns will also support search and rescue operations in the park. Due to the high visitation and extreme conditions, park staff responds to a large number of rescue calls in and around the park. Typically these responses require a large amount of staff to use specialized equipment to help move visitors out of the rough and steep terrain.
Interns will receive training towards a National Park Service Search & Rescue Technician Certification and be asked to support rescue operations regularly. These responses will include searching by foot on and off trail, manning a wheeled litter, providing crowd control, and assisting with response gear. Interns may also receive hands-on technical rope rescue training and advanced search and rescue training.
This position may have housing available and will be determined prior to selections being made.
Position Responsibilities:
- Response to Emergency Medical and Search and Rescue Incidents as a care provider or rescue team member.
- Staffing of first aid tent during special events and holiday weekends.
- Assist with maintenance of equipment as well as supply inventory.
- Roving and foot patrols as requested to assist the Preventative Search and Rescue Team. This may require hiking up to 10 miles in one day.
- Create and execute training classes as requested by the EMS Coordinator.
- Assist staff of Resource Management and Visitor Protection with miscellaneous duties and staffing of events, such as traffic control and resource projects.
Qualifications:
_ First Aid and CPR preferred but not required.
- High level of physical fitness, in order to act as care provider or rescue team member for rescues that occur under the rim.
